Army fitness: the bleep test still sets the pace.

Army entry is now assessed through the Role Fitness Test — runs, lifts and carries matched to your role. But the 20 metre bleep test is still everywhere in army life: unit PT, training establishments and self-assessment.

The requirement

What you're being asked to do

The bleep test maps directly onto the 2 km run standards used in the Role Fitness Test: push into double-figure levels and the running elements of selection will not be your problem.

Train with the call-out version so you always know the level you reached — then track it week on week.

  • Entry testing: Role Fitness Test (runs, lifts, carries)
  • Bleep test: still standard in unit PT and training
  • A strong 20m score predicts comfortable RFT run times
  • Confirm current standards for your role with the recruiter

Questions

Army test FAQs

Does the Army still run the bleep test?

Not as the formal entry test — that’s the Role Fitness Test. But it’s still used constantly in unit PT and training, and it’s the simplest way to build the aerobic base the RFT demands.

What level should I aim for?

There’s no official bleep-test pass mark any more. As a rule of thumb, comfortable double figures on the 20m test means the running standards won’t trouble you.
