The requirement

What you're being asked to do

5.4pass mark at most forces
3:33run time to reach 5.4
525 mdistance covered by 5.4

Level 5.4 is achievable for most applicants with a few weeks of preparation — but the 15 metre course is deceptive. The turns come nearly twice as often as on the familiar 20 metre test, and applicants who only trained on 20m routinely underperform on the day. Train on the exact course and the exact audio.

Specialist roles are assessed at higher levels — dog handlers, mounted officers, public-order and firearms officers all have standards set above 5.4. Your force will confirm the level for your role.

  • Test: 15 metre shuttle run (JRFT)
  • Standard entry pass: level 5.4
  • Specialist roles: higher levels, set per role
  • Practise on 15 metres — the turn frequency matters

Questions

Police test FAQs

Is 5.4 hard to reach?

It’s achievable with a few weeks of practice — about three and a half minutes of running. The trap is pacing: train with the real beeps so the early levels feel slow, not fast.

Do all forces use 5.4?

Most do for entry. Some roles and units ask for more — firearms and dog handlers typically face higher marks. Check your force’s current requirement.

Can I use a free app instead?

You can — but app timing drifts when the screen locks or the phone throttles. Our MP3 is machine-verified to ±5 ms and plays the same every time.
